1. How did you decide to make a typeface based on origami?
I always draw a lot of inspiration from Japanese culture. I did some tactile typography with origami once. After the success of Moshun I decided to combine the idea of origami and kirigami with animated typography.

2. How was the creative process? He worked with pencil and paper?
I used some pen and paper for the first sketches, but I quickly moved to illustrator and after effects to create the typeface. It was all very clear in my head from the start, so I could move straight into production.
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-14 a la(s) 09.18.00
3. Long did it take to finish?
It took about a week from the first sketches to the end result. I already figured out how to ste everthing up during the production of moshun.
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-14 a la(s) 09.18.49
4. What you think would be best to use?
It could work really wel for titles and stuff like that. But in the end, it all depends on the users creativity.
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-14 a la(s) 09.17.01
5. What is the best letter finished?
Not sure. I like the letter B myself.
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-14 a la(s) 09.14.37
6. How did you decide that you can customize?
The typeface is meant for motion designers to use. As a motion designer myself, I know I like to have some freedom to make things my own. It would not be any fun if every project with Typogami looks the same.

1. What techniques and what materials do you use?
I love to creating art but not with the usual paintbrush and watercolour and pencils though - I like to grab whatever I can get hold of - rocks, ketchup, milk, salt, shirts - and turn them into art. It's more fun that way, and it creates new and interesting textures that I would not have discovered had I stuck to using a paintbrush.

2. How was it working for Jay Chou’s portrait?
The project took about 12 hours to finish. Coffee is quite a challenging medium to use - too little water and the rings wouldn't form easily, too much water and the rings would blend into each other, resulting in just a deformed pool of coffee. I had to also wait for the lighter parts too dry up before stamping on the darker rings, or else the rings would not be visible.

3. How does a profession not known for having many women in it? 4. What is the feminine traits that you put to work?
I'm assuming that by this, you mean architecture (I'm a full-time architect). I think there are much more men in this industry, and much more famous male architects than women, because this is a highly demanding career. It is very time-consuming, and one needs to be very firm and tough in this industry, as you deal with many different people - clients, contractors, builders, and engineers. Many capable women take time off from this profession when they start a family. Right now, I truly enjoy working as an architectural designer despite the challenges that I face. I believe when you have passion in what you are doing, people around you will see it and treat you differently, and will respect you even more. I believe there is still a gender disparity in this industry (especially in a place like China...I'm working in Shanghai now), and my belief is that as a woman, I should work twice as hard to show people around me that I have substance in what I am doing.

5. How do you choose the characters that will work?
When I moved to Shanghai, I wanted to create a series of portraits on Chinese personalities to learn more about people here. I wanted to do portraits of artists, athletes, singers, actors, architects – and I spent some time researching and learning about them.My first artwork in Shanghai is a portrait of artist Ai Weiwei using 100,000 sunflower seeds, as a tribute to his Sunflower Seeds installation in the Tate Museum of London.

I did a portrait of an athlete next, and the most famous Chinese athlete here is undoubtedly Yao Ming. I wanted there to be a connection between the tools I was using to paint, and the person whose portrait I was painting, so challenged myself to use a basketball to paint his portrait.

After that, I decided to do one of a singer. Jay Chou may be Taiwanese, but everyone in the mainland still listen to his songs all the time, so I did a portrait of him. I was inspired by the opening line of his song ‘Secret’, about a coffee cup being lifted of a coaster. Therefore, I used coffee and a coffee cup to paint his portrait.

My latest project is that of Chinese film director Zhang Yimou, which I made out of 750 pairs of socks hung up on two bamboo poles. I was very inspired by the little old Shanghainese alleyways 弄堂 (you can see pics here http://www.ohiseered.com/2011/10/day-in-life-of-hong-yiin-shanghai.html ). The locals like to hang up their laundry on bamboo sticks and stick them outside of their windows. On a sunny day, you'll see a lot of clothes hung out on bamboo sticks. To me, it's very traditional and unique, so chinese! I did Zhang yimou's portrait because in his movies, he shows how beautiful and traditional the Chinese culture is. Also, he uses a lot of bamboos in his movies (like House of Flying Daggers).

6. What are your artistic influences?
Growing up, I loved Disney and in my teenage days, I had wished I was born in the 70s so I could have worked with Disney during its golden period. I also grew up loving Picasso's cubist work, I love how he was so unconventional for his time, and how although his paintings looked child-like and imperfect, he was able to display so much feelings in his artworks, of anger, sadness and grief. One quote by Picasso has always inspired me. He once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” When we were children, the world seemed to be filled with limitless possibilities.I think we should sometimes learn to relax a little and learn to not be afraid of silly ideas, and try to think a little more like a child and allow our imaginations to run free. I see many people get more cynical and grumpy as they get older…and don’t think life should be like that. We should learn to be more optimistic about life.

Another artist who has inspired me is Brazilian artist Vik Muniz. He creates amazing artworks using garbage...from far it looks just like a painting, but when you look at it closely, you realise it's made of up little objects!

7. How long does it take you to do one of these works as, for example, Yao Ming portrait?
The Yao Ming and Ai Weiwei portraits took about 2-3 hours; the Jay Chou one took 12 hours, while the Zhang Yimou portrait took 3 weeks!

8. How would you describe your style?
I am an artist, who loves to paint, but not with a paintbrush!

1. How did the idea of making collages with NY Metro cards?
When I first came to the U.S. from Germany I kept my MetroCards after every ride. After about a year, I had collected so many cards that I felt like I needed to find a purpose for them. I also needed a gift for my host-family and was on a very limited budget. So I simply cut up my MetroCards, sorted the little pieces by colors and create a collage of a U.S. map, which I framed and gave to my host-family as a present. They loved the idea and motivated me to create more collages like that.
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-24 a la(s) 11.21.22
2. How is the process of working for one of the works, for example, Woody Allen?
First, I create a pencil drawing of the motif I would like to turn into a collage. A very rough outline drawing... nothing too detailed. As a base I use all kinds of surfaces: canvas, canvas board, paper, wood, acetate, etc. And then I start glueing the small pieces of cut-up MetroCards onto the pencil drawing. The process feels like a combination of painting and doing a jigsaw puzzle, because I fill in the pencil outline with colors I think may look good. Oh, and I pre-cut all my MetroCards before I even start a collage. I keep the small pieces in buckets separated by color.
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-24 a la(s) 11.23.11
3. What is the image that you liked best and why?
I create a larger-than-life pigeon at 40x30 inches. I don't like pigeons in real-life but as a collage made from MetroCards they are very iconic... very New York, you know?
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-24 a la(s) 11.59.21
4. What is the image that you did not like and was completed and why?
I created a collage of a friend's mother once. I felt a tremendous amount of pressure getting the portrait right. My friend's mother had passed away a year before, so it was very important to me to depict her the way she really was – kind, lovely, beautiful. In the end, I liked the portrait a lot and my friend loved it, too, but the process of creating the collage was too much pressure.

Captura de pantalla 2012-08-24 a la(s) 11.24.48
5. How comes the cover of The New York Times and how long it took to make it?
Unless I am creating custom artworks for people, my collages all relate to the city. All my motives have a hint of "New York" in them: Woody Allen, Audrey Hepburn, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Pigeon, the Guggenheim Museum, etc. Even an eye-chart collage I created a while ago spells out the five boroughs or New York. Sometimes you need to look twice to see New York in the collages, but you will. Obviously the New York Times is a very iconic part of the city. It is a globally recognized paper, so why not make it out of MetroCards? It is only 11.5 x 15.5. inches in size but it took me about 20 hours to create it. Cutting out the black font from the magnetic strip of the MetroCards was very time-consuming.

6. Some of his works are typographical, something not very common in artists. Why you are encouraged to work on fonts?
I studied graphic design at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) and my favorite courses were always the typography classes. It is difficult to get the fonts just right and to make them work in the overall design. To cut out custom letters from magnetic strips of MetroCards is of course a tedious kind of work, but I enjoy it. The collage-technique is much more forgiving than a printed typographic design. In my collages, letters can have uneven edges – it makes the design more interesting instead of less appealing.

1. How did you come to a font where the letter N is transformed into a broken leg bone showing?
The alphabet came about while sitting in a medical school library with my girlfriend while she studied. I had always wanted to create the alphabet in what I consider my style, and I needed to do something to pass the time, so I just started sketching. The sort of drippy mouths, tongues and body parts tend to come naturally when I'm sketching, so it was just a matter of shaping that into letters.
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-30 a la(s) 23.49.30
2. How long did it take to complete the alphabet and the letter which was more complex to achieve?
I worked on the alphabet whenever I had free time in between my full time job and freelance projects. Overall, it spanned over 4 months of slowly chipping away at each letter. There wasn't necessarily one letter more complex to work on than others, but for some reason I kept putting off working on the letter F. It just didn't feel like a fun letter to think about, so I just skipped over it until I was ready.
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-30 a la(s) 23.49.07
3. How did the process work? First did pencil drawings and then you went to Illustrator?
All my vector illustrations start off as rather loose sketches with a pencil and paper. I sketched A through M first, minus F, then scanned it to my computer. I took that into illustrator and started to outline the shapes and give it some color. Whenever I would get tired of working on the computer, I would get the sketchbook out and start illustrating the second half of the alphabet. It definitely helped to break the project up so I wasn't staring at the computer all the time.

4. What inspired you most of the animated series Ren & Stimpy?
I was really inspired by the shapes and roundness of the characters. It all seemed rather soft and mushy. I think that helped to enhance the gross feeling the show exuded.
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-30 a la(s) 23.50.47
Captura de pantalla 2012-08-30 a la(s) 23.51.14
5. What is the letter did you like drawing? Why?
Letters B and G are probably my favorite. I like the level of creativity in them and they easily came together when I put the pencil to the paper. Plus, it's always fun to draw mouths and tongues. The ampersand is another good one. I'm working on creating a series of different ampersands in my free time. It's just a matter of finding the time!

Alucinante.
IMG_0915

4. Qué nunca le van a pasar a esas piernas? ¿Por qué?

Usted sólo tendrá que esperar para averiguarlo!
Haunted_Legs_Post15

Boceto a mano.

I've also thought about doing a small "encore" story. I'd think it's safe to say that you haven't seen the end of The Haunted Legs yet! Stay tuned to www.briancook.net/hauntedlegs for updates!
